Fear

Fear is such a relative emotion. What one person is afraid of may not even cross the mind of someone else. Also, depending on a person’s experience and environment fear can be different for each individual. On top of that, the deceiver (Satan) can lead individuals to fear something that can trap and enslave them.

Mike asked a question the other day of each of our kids… What are you afraid of?

We had a range of answers:

Ethan: I am afraid I could break my foot. (The “smart” answer since he had recently broken his foot.

Rebecca: I am afraid of dying.

Sarah: I am afraid of lightning and having a baby.

Anderson: I am afraid of getting lost in Goodwill. Yes, that is what he said.

At first, I thought, “How cute?” Then I thought, “How real?”, “How honest?”

My kids and I have not grasped the truth that God has for us in not fearing the things of this world and what Satan tries to deceive us with. As a grown-up, I find it so funny how my fears are really no different than a child’s fears. We want to be well liked. We desire to please others and not disappoint someone. We would sometimes cover our fears with words like… “I am just being careful” when it is actually fear. God has called us out of our comforts to a life of trust. So, I speak to myself by saying, God, I trust you know matter what. I just need to take my fears to Him. He knows exactly what to do with them.

I Peter 3:13-15- “Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened."But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”

Light bulbs

In my early 20’s I really thought I had most spiritual things figured out. I would look at myself and not see many things that needed to be changed. I laugh at that now. I would look at verses and highlight them for someone else that needed to hear it.

The Holy Spirit revealed some things to me and I finally came to my senses. Through a personal bible study I was doing in my mid 20’s, I discovered the process of growth. I knew that the Christian life was a process of learning and applying but the Holy Spirit truly spoke to me through a…”vision” of sorts. That’s the only word I can think of to describe it.

I pictured myself in a long narrow tunnel. The tunnel represented my Christian walk. The tunnel was dimly lit.

At the top of the tunnel I could see chains hanging down to light bulbs. You know the kind you see in a closet. Some of the light bulbs were already on but not all of them. The Holy Spirit revealed to me that the entire tunnel ceiling was full of light bulbs that were not yet on. In my past, with the help of the Holy Spirit, I had reached up and pulled some chains but I had many, many more to see.

The light bulbs represent many aspects of Christ and what He wants to give me- joy, peace, comfort, strength, resolve, perseverance, boldness, knowledge, wisdom and so much more. I just have to be willing to reach up.

The tunnel gets brighter and brighter as I discover what Christ has for me in this life. I know that I have a long way to go and thankfully I don’t want to quit walking on this journey of growth and light bulbs.

Hosea's Wife-Gomer

I was recently looking again at the book of Hosea in the Bible because of a song by Brooke Fraser titled Hosea’s Wife. I also recalled the book by Francis Rivers titled Redeeming Love. When I was reading Hosea I found myself shocked and amazed. I simply can’t get over the actions of Gomer. She repeatedly turned from Hosea in spite of his forgiveness. Yet I was even more astonished at how Hosea responded. He continually took her back.

Through the book of Hosea and then hearing the song Hosea’s Wife and remembering back to the fiction account of Gomer I am shocked at God’s response to us. I don’t want to forget how much like Gomer I really am. I don’t want to hang on to guilt or shame but I do want to remember what God saved me from because of His love for me. I am His creation!

Also, the book of Hosea is a parallel account of how God’s people repeatedly turned from Him and God took them back over and over again. I don’t want to forget that truth when I am dealing with people in His Body or even outside the Body. I give up on people to easily at times.

Note: I am not a fiction reader. There are a few exceptions. One fiction book I do highly recommend is Redeeming Love. It was amazing and real.

Shed This Shallow Skin

When reading Ephesians 4 that phrase came to mind…shed this shallow skin. I read these lyrics in a song and thought of these verses-

“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4:22-24

Often times I forget about the fact that once I accepted Christ I became a “new self”. The traits that come with the new me are hard to work on if I am putting on the old me. In Ephesians 4 it speaks of the traits of the “old self” - bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. I can keep holding on to those traits and not let go. In Christ, I am called to be like Christ seeking righteousness and holiness.

You know what’s funny is that I don’t find it difficult with the BIG issues it is the daily activities that I struggle with the most. I catch myself focusing on how I want things instead of being more like Christ.

Daily I am striving to simply shed that shallow skin and put on the new attitude and holiness Christ.

Books...Books...Books

I love to read and no doubt I have already shared that in some previous blog post. I just love learning new things. I enjoy reading mainly non-fiction books- biographies, spiritual growth books and books that my friend’s recommend. So, as I start my new book list for 2009 you may find some unusual titles. Don’t worry. I diligently pray that God will reveal His truth through the books I read and I also look to His word to confirm the ideas and thoughts shared.

I pray that this coming year will be filled with experiences to grow me and stretch me beyond what I could think or imagine. I know with that kind of thinking God could and will most likely bring about hard and even difficult situations. I just don't want to pray empty words that so often in the past I have prayed ... "I pray for a year filled with blessings and prosperity." Not that those things aren't important but I want growth more than anything in my life. Growth brings about change. Actually, it rids me of me. "Me" gets me into jams.

So, I desire to earnestly pray for God to give me the words so that I can experience all He has for 2009 . I know HE will make it interesting. I am reminded of the promise in Romans 8:16-18 that because we are God's children the sufferings (anguish, pain, even growth) is so that we can share in His glory. That's wild. It's amazing!

Bible Verses-Colossians 1:9-14

I just love the Bible. I love the “So that”, “For this reason” and “In order that” phrases. Those words make it much clearer for me what I am suppose to do to grow more spiritually.

The Long Defeat...Hmmm

I became familiar with this phrase when I heard a song by Sara Groves called The Long Defeat. I thought it was an odd phrase. I looked it up on Google.

The Long Defeat is a phrase denoting an apparently impossible but noble battle.

A book I had heard of but have not yet read called Mountain beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder speaks of this Long Defeat in relation to an experience Dr. Paul Farmer had in Haiti as a medical doctor. He fought continually under hopeless circumstances only to see glimpses of victory but the battle of the poor and sick had yet to be won. He continued on despite the apparent losing battle.

Here is a quote I found from the book…

I have fought the long defeat and brought other people on to fight the long defeat, and I’m not going to stop because we keep losing. Now I actually think sometimes we may win. I don’t dislike victory.... We want to be on the winning team, but at the risk of turning our backs on the losers, no, it’s not worth it. So you fight the long defeat.

After hearing the song and searching the meaning of the phrase I realized how much in our world is a Long Defeat for us. I see such need in the world spiritually and physically and it can be so overwhelming knowing that in my lifetime I can’t WIN. Here are just a few examples (throughout the world): hunger, orphans, slavery, friends and family who don’t know Christ.

Here is what the song and the book focused on and it is what we need to focus on too~

The Long Defeat...While this may sound defeatist, when used in this way, the term implies to those who use it that since the battle appears hopeless, any progress, or even a single life saved, can be viewed as a victory. (Wikipedia)

"I can't just fight when I think I'll win." Sara Groves

As followers of Christ, we must continue to fight in the battle and hold on to the truth that Christ is the one who tells us to fight.
Many times throughout the New Testament (1 & 2 Timothy, James and Philippians) we are told to press on and persevere. This world is in such need (spiritually and physically) and we are called to share with those who are weary, lost and feel hopeless. It is our responsibility. It is the least we can do because we were hopeless, hungry orphaned slaves. Let's not forget that Christ never turns His back on the losers.

Note: The phrase was also used in the Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. He also described it along with history itself. He saw history as a long defeat with glimpses of victory in sight.

The Very Thought

I was reminded by the Holy Spirit today to be grateful for the simple things. How quickly I can take things and others for granted. A song came to my mind that reminds me how the beauty of this world is enough and even the ability to see it. This song is written by Ginny Owens who has been blind since the age of two. She started playing piano at that age. Ginny Owens is also very involved in raising support for the freeing of the millions of slaves in the world today. I pray I can recognize the simple blessings and be focused on the eternal. The very thought of what Christ has given should stir in us a desire to recognize Him in the simple things. We have way more than we deserve.

Operation Christmas Child

Our family had a terrific time at Operation Christmas Child (Samaritan’s Purse) this week. I know most of you are familiar with this ministry. They are the ones that send shoeboxes around the world to children who may never receive anything for Christmas except this shoebox. We went to the warehouse that is setup in Atlanta. People from across the state send shoeboxes to this location. The shoeboxes are inspected and then sent by plane, trains and trucks to all over the world. The shoeboxes are filled with toys, candy, toothbrushes, pencils etc. When the boxes arrive in Africa or India (the locations from Atlanta) the shoeboxes are distributed to villages and towns. Samaritan’s Purse volunteers then share the gospel to the village. They also go back within a few weeks for follow up. It is an excellent ministry.
When we went to the warehouse they had a tour of the facility and then activities for the kids. It was a great day for us. Our family has been participating for several years. If you have not participated check it out for next year! Some statistic: Since the start of the ministry (1993) over 61 million shoeboxes have been sent to children around the world. This year the goal is to send out 8 million.

Searching for the perfect curriculum and books

Well, my search has begun. I have been homeschoolin' for 5 years now and I still haven't found the PERFECT books and curriculum. I know...I know... There is no such thing but I so want there to be. I have several books that I will continue to use but as the kids get older I see such different ways they learn. So, I am trying to find as many things as I can that I can overlap with more than 2 of the 4 kids.
I went to the GHEA conference this weekend and I always enjoy going. I get to flip through lots of different types of curriculum and books. I love it! I walk away with having an idea of what I don't want. I just want to leave with a clearer sense of what I do want.
I enjoyed hearing Jeannie Fulbright & Dana Spears . Check out their website for great resources.
I did feel more relaxed about my upcoming year. I know God is my source of strength and peace as I continue this journey of homeschooling.

Ethan's playing baseball for a friend going to China

Starting tonight Ethan is playing baseball to help a friend who is going on a missions trip to China.
His friend Noah Stephens is going to China with his mom & dad. They are going to be serving in an orphanage in China. They need to raise a few thousand dollars for the trip there and back. So, Ethan has people sponsoring him over the next 10 games. He is very excited about it. He loves baseball and he is really good. So, sponsors be ready to pay up. It is for a good cause.

Chores- Here's Help!

Tackling chores a problem? Multiple kids? Lots of stuff?

It is time consuming in the beginning because you need to enter all the chores you would like to accomplish. (Daily, Monthly, Yearly) After you enter the chores and the family members that are to do the chores it works on its own.
Oh yeah, it's FREE. We have been using it for 3 weeks or so. I love it! Let me know if you want to know more about it. It has been a time-saver for me.

A Call to Die...A call to what?

I have been reading a book titled A Call to Die by David Nasser. There is nothing magical about it. I am always cautious about books that people seem to look at as “divine”. I hope that makes sense. I am not a radical about it. Just cautious. The first place we should always look for inspiration and guidance is directly from God’s Word.

OK~ Now that I said that. This book I am reading A Call to Die is very eye-opening and challenging. It is meant to be a 40 day journey of fasting (from many things) and then also examining the spiritual disciplines that Christ has called us all to have as His followers. So, if you are looking to be challenged and to grow I highly recommend this book. Obviously, by the title of the book A Call to Die it is not a light hearted read.

I love to organize

Yes, I love to organize. To be honest, you wouldn’t know it because I live with five other individuals that don’t exactly share my love. I do see a couple of my kids that may have the bent towards it. There is always hope. Right now, I am trying to devise a plan that will be more efficient and will keep everyone involved in the running of the Fountain household. Thankfully, I have a husband that is willing to help wherever needed. I am trying to figure out what is too much organization and time management. I know God wants us to be available for interruptions and flexible for what He would have me do. So, I pray I can come up with a plan that is God honoring. I will let you all know.

His Fruit in My Service

I have been reading the Gospel of John recently & I have been brought back to the verses about bearing fruit. It is such a foundational truth.

John 15:4-6

Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.

In these three verses He says "remain" six times. Remain means to abide. What a really cool word. Abide... I don't want it any other way. I desire for this to be my goal all the time. The factor that doesn't change is God. The other part of the equation that can change is us. The word "if" appears each time before words related to us. He is unchanging. We are the "iffy" factor. I want & need more FRUIT in my life that can only come from Him!

Hamburger in a back pocket

I can't believe I have found a way to put the words "hamburger" and "back pocket" into the same sentence. This past week we had a Super Bowl Party at our house for the teenagers. Mike grilled hamburgers and hotdogs. Well, my kids enjoy eating both but apparently Sarah really likes hamburgers. Monday morning I went to wash clothes as I usually do on Mondays and to my surprise in the bottom of the washing machine was a 1/4 of a grilled hamburger patty. I couldn't figure out where it had come from. Then I dry that load of clothes only to find another 1/4 of a hamburger patty.
Well, you can probably see where this is headed. My daughter Sarah decided that she wanted to save some of her hamburger for later so she stuck the hamburger patty in her back pocket just in case she got hungry. I truly can't believe what they can come up with to keep my laughing. Well, that wasn't her original intent but it worked. I hope it makes you laugh too.

Kids and Activities

It's been about two 1/2 weeks since my last post. The kids schedules have kicked into high gear.
Ethan has travel baseball practice. Sarah is in basketball. Rebecca is cheerleading. Anderson is into tagging along. It is hard to know how much is too much (sometimes). There are times it is obvious when overload is coming. So, we know to back away from things. There is a balance to it all. I have never been one to compare my life to other's or measure it against how other's are living. I know Mike & I have to use wisdom as we decide for our family what to be involved in. We want so much for our kids. Sometimes we want too much for our kids. We have been blessed with many opportunities and I don't want to take it for granted. I also see that every activity is to be honoring to God. Well, we need to look at it that way and sometimes we just go and go without realizing what we are even doing. I have been praying that I will simply honor God in everything I do and everywhere I go.

Our new venture!

Well, Mike & I have started a new venture. I could say adventure. We will be leading workshops for homeschool students. We needed to earn some extra income but also saw a need for the workshops we will be offering. I am already seeing the challenges with balancing family, school, activities & many other responsibilites. I know the Lord is leading us every step of the way and I pray I will remember that (all the time).

Homeschool? Why?

I know some of you that may read my blog are homeschoolers. So, I am sure you can relate to this question above. Sometimes it is actually unsaid but implied. The interesting thing about the question is the wide range of answers a person would get. So, I am sure my answer will vary from some of yours but here it goes.

I homeschool because … God has called me to do it right now in my life.
I have nothing against public school and believe firmly that some teachers are called into it as much as some families are called to send kids to public school. I do believe there are some that should be homeschooling that aren't but I also believe there are some homeschooled kids that are supposed to be in public school.
When we personally made the decision to homeschool we knew it was God calling us to do it and it was because Christ knew what our kids needed. It was not to keep our kids in a box and to keep them from the “evil” public school. In the book ~ Velvet Elvis~ Rob Bell talks about how we Christians forget sometimes that God is omnipresent. How true. God is in the public schools as much as He is in my home. It is not a protection factor for me. God is more than capable of protecting them anywhere and everywhere. we do have to guard our hearts and theirs and I do think that plays a part in it for us.

Let me also say this~ God has blessed our homeschool years so far and I see such benefit in it for our family. I feel like we have so many choices and opportunities with homeschooling that I can’t imagine doing anything else. We have been able to be involved in ministries with the kids. Help people in times of need. Teach our kids practical life skills and so much more. I could go on and on about how awesome it is but really it is up to us to simply listen and obey to whatever God is calling us to do now. You can’t go wrong if you do that. Homeschool? Why not?

Pushing through the dirt

I absolutely love listening to music. I enjoy the music itself but I really love the lyrics of songs. Certain lyrics will stick out to me at moments I need them it seems. I guess that's like anything else in life. God uses different things at different times. Mike leads the worship band at our church now and introduced this song awhile back but just recently it hit me. I am sure most of you have heard it but I wanted to share the lyrics with you.

The Sand Art of Buddist Monks

The picture to the right is a design made from sand. I was fascinated by it and the unbelievable details. It was made by Buddhist monks. I was amazed at the patience and perseverance it must have taken to make. The purpose in making it is to show beauty and discipline but also to show how everything in this world is temporary. It takes several days to make a design like this and after it is completed the monks sweep it up (literally with brooms) during a ceremony. The purpose is to make this beautiful artwork only for it to be destroyed after it is completed. I thought how symbolic for us too. We have many opportunities around us each day to help create beautiful things & enjoy the beauty around us. Our tendency is to take ownership in relationships & possessions that we don't "own". We need to make our purpose about Christ only. We can often times hold on too tight to things that will be swept up very quickly. By the way, I pray that the one true God will reveal Himself to the Buddist monks through this type of artwork. God uses so many different things that He himself has created.

Divine Metamorphosis

I am sure I didn't come up with that phrase myself~ Divine Metamorphosis. I just don't remember where I heard it. A verse I read this week brought the phrase to my mind~ "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" I have heard this verse a lot but it is funny sometimes how a verse can say so much to me personally. I am holding on to this verse as I encounter people who don't have that kind of change in their life. Honestly, it is taken for granted so often by us "Christians". This is completely life-changing. I am determined to share this verse with others. I may not verbalize it directly to others but I know I can share it directly by just living it out.

A day in the life of...

My day just never seems to be the same or at least it never has a regular schedule. For a long time, I really thought it should be more routine because kids need consistence, routine, schedule, etc. Well, what I am discovering is that some of that is true but I think I was trapped in my routine/schedule and had become oblivious to the things around me. God does a lot of awesome things for us and through us and we need to be looking for what He is doing.

I have my hands in a lot of things and that is ok if God is directing me in those things. I am constantly re-evaluating my activities and positions because I don't want to miss the "small blessings". I don't want to miss my son dressing up like Spiderman and trying to shoot me with his webs. I don't want to miss my daughter singing a care bear song and making up a dance routine to go along with it.

There will be times I just miss it but I pray I will be in the moment more than not.

God, what are you doing?

My husband was on national television this morning. It was a short 15 mins. of fame. It was more like 60 seconds. He shared what he could about the importance of sharing the gospel with teenagers. The topic could bring great debate but Mike searched and prayed about it. He was confident in what he is doing as a youth pastor. He was unshaken.

My kids, the 3 little ones, were not so impressed with Mike being on t.v. Sarah asked "Why isn't he talking to me?" So, their dad is just their dad. Ethan just wanted a NY Yankees hat. I think he thought it was pretty cool. I had the opportunity to talk to Ethan about the topic. He was a little surprised by what the discussion was about. This has given Ethan a new appreciation for what his dad is doing with teenagers.
